What is Digital Marketing?

Internet marketing, online marketing and digital marketing, they are all the same thing right? They are just different names for what offer the same marketing methods?

Whilst you would be right that internet marketing and online marketing is indeed the same thing, digital marketing is different. Not completely different but different all the same. In fact, internet marketing (or online marketing) is just one of a number of different facets of digital marketing.

So What is Digital Marketing?

Digital marketing will often use internet marketing services such as SEO (search engine optimisation), email marketing, paid advertising and social media marketing but also covers other marketing channels through the use of any digital devices such as smartphones, games consoles, fax machines and tablets.

Internet marketing is by far the most common form of marketing within the digital marketing niche, yet it does not cover SMS advertising, fax broadcasting, mobile instant messaging and smartphone apps. Each of these marketing channels will fall under digital marketing alongside that of internet marketing.

What are the Benefits of Digital Marketing?

Anyone that is involved in business, is an executive or works in marketing will have a strong understanding of the more traditional forms of marketing used over the years such as television, radio and print advertising. They will know that these marketing channels offer great potential of increasing business, hence why they are all still widely used today despite the constant evolution of the internet and other digital technologies.
However, despite the success of these marketing methods, they do have a few drawbacks. First, they are expensive when compared to the more modern digital marketing methods. This is especially important for small businesses that obviously do not have the marketing budget of some of the world’s largest corporations.

Secondly, it is very difficult to know the data behind just how successful these campaigns are. The success can really only be gauged over time as there is no instant data available like there is with digital marketing techniques.
Digital marketing allows marketers to see the impact of their campaigns in real-time and collect data as it goes along. You can find out what is being viewed, how often it is being viewed, how long it is being viewed and whether it is leading to conversions of any sort.
This makes digital marketing an extremely powerful way to market your business no matter how big or small. Digital marketing is affordable, extremely effective when done right and can be tracked and tweaked along the way.

So what is digital marketing? It is the number one method of marketing in the modern world and is ever evolving and adapting as technology provides even more marketing methods for it to utilize. The industry is already huge but we can expect to see it continue to grow and further justify its tag as the number one marketing niche.
